Important

Your appointment will last approximately 6 hours.

It will take place in the Kingston Hospital Main Outpatients Department, Level 4, Corridor E, Diabetes Day Unit.

Preparing for your test

There is no need to fast (avoid food and drink) in preparation. You can eat and drink as usual before your test.

We advise you to bring some snacks with you, to eat after your test.

During the test

You can expect the following during your test.

  • We will insert a small plastic tube (a cannula) into a vein in your arm. We will use this to take blood samples and we may use it to give you medication in an emergency.
  • We will collect baseline (benchmark) blood samples.
  • We will make sure you do not eat or drink for 4 hours, under our supervision.
  • During this period, we will monitor you regularly, including general health observations and your capillary blood glucose (CBG) levels.
  • After 4 hours, we will take a further set of blood samples. After this, you can eat and drink.
  • We may ask you to stay with us for a short period following the test. We will make sure you are feeling well before you leave.
