Possible effects of cannabis
Research shows the following possible effects of using cannabis during pregnancy.
On your unborn baby
The following are possible effects on your unborn baby.
- Abnormal brain development.
- Small baby. Your baby may not grow as it should.
- Higher chance of stillbirth.
- Higher chance of being born too early and needing care in the neonatal unit.
- Behavioural problems in childhood and difficulties paying attention in school.
On you
The following are possible effects on you.
- Potential permanent lung damage and an increased risk of cancer.
- Reduced judgement and co-ordination, putting you at greater risk of injury.
- Lower levels of oxygen in your body, which can lead to breathing problems.
- Higher chance of long-term mental health problems.
On breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is the recommended way to feed your baby and it has many health benefits.
Cannabis crosses over into breast milk. Do not use cannabis while you are breastfeeding your baby.
On parenting
Cannabis can damage your judgement, awareness and coordination. If you have been using cannabis, have someone responsible present while you look after your baby.

There is no evidence that cannabis helps morning sickness. Speak to your midwife about safer options.
The effects of using cannabidiol (CBD) are currently unknown. Babies exposed to cannabis in the womb may be irritable and more difficult to settle after they are born.
Ask your midwife for help quitting
Your midwife can offer you and your baby the most appropriate care to keep you both safe and well.
You can talk honestly about your cannabis use with your midwife. Do not worry if it feels awkward or uncomfortable.
Your midwife will not judge you for anything you say.
