About the ENT clinic
Our ENT clinic (ear, nose and throat clinic) aims:
- to get you seen as soon as possible
- get any tests done on the same day
- give you a diagnosis quickly.
This mean that the clinic is very busy and your visit may last up to 4 hours.
Tests
The following procedures may be recommended. Before we do anything, we will explain everything and ask for you to agree. If possible, the tests will be done on the same day.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound scan is a painless procedure. It uses sound waves to get a picture under the skin. Gel is spread on the skin and a scanning probe is then moved over this area.
This scan is done by a member of the Radiology team in a separate area of the hospital.
Fine needle aspiration
Using a fine needle and syringe, cells are drawn from the area being examined. The sample is then examined under a microscope by a member of the pathology team.
The results may be available later in the day. In some cases, we may need to take a second sample, or do more tests on the first sample.
Laryngoscopy
A fine flexible tube with a camera may be used to look inside your throat.
Next steps
Before you leave the clinic, we will explain what will happen next. We will send you a follow-up appointment once results are available.
