ERPC means 'evacuation of retained products of conception'. We perform an ERPC to remove products of conception from a patient's womb.
What to expect following your procedure
For the first 24 hours
- Do not drive for at least 24 hours. Only drive when you feel confident enough to control your vehicle safely. Check with your insurer if you have questions.
- Make sure you move around frequently. This will reduce the risk of blood clots and speed up your recovery.
- You can shower after 24 hours.
- You can expect your first period in 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. It may be heavier than usual. Use sanitary pads, not tampons for this episode of bleeding.
- You may experience period-like cramps and mild bleeding for 2 to 3 weeks. Take your usual over-the-counter painkillers if you need them.
Important
Until your bleeding has settled, do not:
- have sexual intercourse
- have a bath or use a vaginal douche
- go swimming.
You can restart these activities when your bleeding has settled.
Future pregnancy
You can start trying for another pregnancy after your first period.
If you need contraception, start using a condoms and seek advice from your GP or local family planning service.
When it is 3 weeks since your procedure, take a pregnancy test using an early morning urine (wee) sample. Let us know if this is not negative.
