Making an appointment

You will need to make an appointment to register the birth in person.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

There is also a limited number of additional appointments on Saturdays, 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Who can register the birth

The following people can register the baby's birth:

  • baby's mother
  • baby's father (if they were married to the mother at the time of birth)
  • both parents (if they are not married to each other and want the father's details to be registered).

One of the parents must register the birth in person.

You cannot ask a friend or relative to register the birth on your behalf.

What to take with you

Take the following with you to your register appointment:

  • the baby’s 'Red Book' (Personal Child Health Record) or hospital discharge papers
  • your own photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • marriage/civil partnership certificate (if applicable).

Information to give the registrar

The registrar will ask for the following information:

  • date of baby's birth
  • baby's full name
  • where the baby was born
  • mother's full name
  • mother's name before she was married (maiden name)
  • mother's date and place of birth
  • mother's address
  • mother's occupation.

If the father's details are to be included, the registrar will ask for the following information:

  • father's full name
  • father's date and place of birth
  • father's address
  • father's occupation.

If the parents are married to each other, the registrar will ask for the following:

  • date of their marriage
  • number of other children (if any).

The registrar will give you the baby's birth certificate before you leave.

It is free to register the birth, but there is a charge for a birth certificate. For the current price, see UK government information here

Other registration locations

If you cannot visit Kingston Register Office, you can go to any other register office and give them the details of the birth.

You will still need to register the birth within 42 days (6 weeks).

They will send your information to Kingston on your behalf. This is called 'registering a birth by declaration'.

If you register the birth at another office (not Kingston), the birth certificate will be posted to you.
