About us

The Richmond Respiratory Care Team comprises specialist physiotherapists and nurses, supported by our therapy assistant and administrators.

We provide specialist assessment and long-term management for patients who:

  • are aged 18 and over
  • are registered with a GP in Richmond
  • have a confirmed diagnosis of COPD, pulmonary fibrosis or bronchiectasis.

We aim to improve your quality of life by helping you to do the following:

  • self-manage your condition
  • reduce the risk of a sudden worsening of your condition
  • avoid the need for hospital admission.

Where we see patients

We have outpatient clinics in:

  • Teddington
  • East Sheen
  • Richmond.

We also offer home visits to housebound patients.

What we offer

We offer the following:

  • regular reviews of your lung condition
  • recommendations of inhaler therapy and respiratory medicines
  • pulmonary (lungs/respiration) rehabilitation programmes
  • chest physiotherapy exercises (sputum clearance and breathing control)
  • support with exacerbation (sudden worsening)
  • self-management plans
  • home oxygen assessment and reviews
  • telephone support between appointments.

What to expect

First appointment

At your first appointment we will:

  • discuss your current respiratory symptoms
  • take a history of your respiratory health
  • assess your condition by:
    • listening to your breathing
    • checking your blood pressure and pulse
    • recording your oxygen levels
    • checking your inhaler technique.

We may also measure your lung function (spirometry testing). See 'More information' below.

We will discuss your treatment options with you and offer advice on how best to manage your condition.

We may offer you a self-management plan during your appointment, or we may send it to you afterwards.

After your appointment

Following you appointment we will write to your GP summarising our review of your condition.

This review will include any treatment recommendations we have made to try and improve your symptom (such as changes to your inhaler).

We will send you a copy of this letter.

Future appointments

We will offer you regular reviews with the team. The frequency of these reviews will depend on the stability or severity of your lung condition.

We see most patients every 3, 6 or 12 months.
