Important

  • You should arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time.
  • You will be given a local anaesthetic.
  • You will be at the hospital for 2 to 3 hours.
  • We recommend you do not drive yourself home.

Instructions

Beforehand

  • Stop blood-thinning medicines

If you are taking blood-thinning medicines (such as warfarin or clopidogrel) telephone the anticoagulant clinic or your GP for instructions. Do this as soon as you get this letter.

They may tell you to stop these medicines a certain number of days before the operation.

  • Remove hair from scrotum

5 days before your operation, you must remove the hair from the front of your scrotum. You can buy hair removal (depilatory) cream from any pharmacy and most supermarkets. Buy one for sensitive areas (designed for bikini lines).

Some people have a reaction to the hair removal cream. If the cream makes you sore or itchy, wash it off immediately. Instead, trim the hair from your scrotum with scissors.

On the day

  • Food and drink

Morning appointment – have a light breakfast.
Afternoon appointment – have a normal breakfast but light lunch.

  • Have a shower or bath before coming to the hospital.

  • Wear loose clothes and flat comfortable shoes.

  • Do not bring unnecessary money or valuables with you. Secure storage is limited.

  • Take any medication as usual. Follow the instructions about blood-thinning medicines you were given by your anticoagulant clinic or GP.

Going home

We recommend you arrange for someone else to drive you home.

You should not drive until you feel comfortable and can safely do an emergency stop. This is to avoid any unnecessary pressure on the surgical site.
