Professional development
Prior to commencing work in the UK, you must satisfy immigration requirements and have permission to work. The immigration rules are set by the Home Office, and there are several routes under which you may qualify.
We have outlined below some of the routes available for you as a doctor. This information is correct at the time of publication but please refer to the Home Office website for the latest information.
Should you have any specific questions that the attached links and/or gov.uk website cannot answer, please contact our Medical HR team on krft.
Individual immigration rights
Certain non-EEA nationals who are the spouse or partner of an EEA citizen may have the right to enter and work in the UK. A right to entry may also be conferred by ancestry.
If you may have any such individual rights, please check the Home Office website and contact them for individual or general advice:
General immigration permissions
If you do not have an individual immigration rights as described above, permission to enter and work in the UK is determined under rules set by the Home Office.
Health and Care Worker visa
Having received an offer to work with us as a doctor, you will likely meet the criteria to apply for The Health and Care skilled worker visa. Applications for this Visa are fast-tracked by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the aim is to process them within three weeks. The other advantages of this Visa include reduced visa fees and exemption from the annual Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
More details about this Visa can be found on the GOV.UK website.
Skilled Worker Visa
This visa replaced the old Tier 2 (General) visa and is suitable for a wide range of skilled roles, including doctors. You must meet salary thresholds and will need to pay the annual Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
More details about this Visa can be found on the GOV.UK website.
Visa duration and renewal
Most work visas are granted for up to 5 years. You can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years of continuous residence. Do keep track of visa expiry dates and renew in advance to avoid legal issues.
Your partner and children - Your partner and children can apply to join you or stay in the UK as your ‘dependants’ if they are eligible. Please refer to the GOV.UK website for further details on this and how to apply.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) / eVisas
The BRP was a physical card previously issued by the UK Home Office to non-UK nationals who were granted permission to live, work, or study in the UK for more than six months. It was used to confirm identity, right to work, right to study and right to any public services or benefits you are entitled to.
All BRPs have now expired and have been replaced by digital eVisas which is an online digital record of your identity and immigration status and includes conditions of your status, e.g. if you’re allowed to work or study in the UK.
If you were issued a BRP before 31st of October 2024, it may still be valid temporarily but cannot be used for international travel.
You can use this link to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access your eVisa: www.
For more details on BRP please visit www.
For more details on eVisas please visit: www.
Visits by overseas family members
You may want your family to visit you in the UK. Depending on the Nationality of your family member, they may need apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.
You can check if they need a Visa to visit the UK, on the GOV.UK website.
To find out more about visiting the UK as a Standard Visitor or to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa, visit the GOV.UK website.

Kingston is situated on the River Thames and is notable as the ancient market town in which Saxon kings were crowned.
Central Kingston is a busy, largely pedestrian and predominantly retail centre, with a small number of commercial offices and civic buildings. The shopping centre includes a shopping mall “The Bentall Centre", containing the Bentalls department store and large branches of chain stores found in many British high streets. There is a large branch of the John Lewis department store group, with a Waitrose supermarket in the basement. A smaller 1960s shopping centre called Eden Walk exists nearby. The Rotunda, in a former Bentalls furniture depository building (a local landmark), includes a bowling alley, fitness centre, a multiplex cinema and restaurants.
Kingston's civic buildings include Kingston Museum, public library, modern Crown Court, smaller County Court and the Guildhall.
Kingston's main open space is the River Thames, with its lively frontage of bars and restaurants.
Richmond Park, located just a 5-minute walk from Kingston Hospital, offers a picturesque escape for walking, running, and cycling. Its ancient woods, rolling hills, and wide-open grasslands make it London's largest site of special scientific interest and a national nature reserve.
Registering with the GP is an important first steps when you arrive in the UK. The process is simple and involves the following:

Step 2: Complete the registration form
Once you have chosen a GP practice you should:
- contact them to find out how they will receive your application
- download and complete the registration form
- email the completed registration form to the practice
Step 3: Registration confirmation
When your registration has been received by the GP practice you’ll be notified, either by telephone or email to advise if your application to register has been successful.
You can find your nearest GP surgery by searching online and also looking at reviews before you sign up.
You can read more about registering with a GP on the NHS website.
Your NHS number and the NHS App
Upon registering with a GP, you will be given an NHS number. This is a unique number that enables health and social care staff and service providers to identify you correctly and match your details to your health and care records. You may also wish to download the NHS App on your smartphone or tablet via Google Play or the App Store. This will provide a simple and secure way to manage your health record, book appointments, view test results, order prescriptions and much more. You can also access the same services in a web browser by logging in through the NHS website.

Opening a bank account is a must before you begin your job. It is a relatively simple process if you have the right documents, and our medical HR team is here to help you with it. To open a UK bank account, you’ll need two documents: one to prove your identity and one to prove your address. This applies both in-branch and online.
Proving your identity is simple, you would just need to present your passport, driving licence or identity card (if you’re an EU national).
Providing a proof of address can be difficult if you do not have a UK address at the time of opening a bank account when you first arrive in the UK. Most banks accept a letter issued by your employer confirming your identity and your address. Our Medical HR team can provide you with this letter to help open your bank account.
Below is a list of local banks where you can open an account and get started. There are online / digital banks like Monzo and Revolut which you can also consider and can often be quicker to set up.
