Recovery after the birth

Having a baby changes your body physically. After giving birth, it is important to make sure you consume enough iron. This will help your recovery.

Iron tablets

After giving birth, we recommend you take iron tablets for at least 3 months.

If possible, take these tablets:

  • on an empty stomach
  • at least 30 minutes before breakfast
  • with water or a source of vitamin C (for example orange juice).

If you experience side effects, you can take these tablets on alternate days.

Healthy diet

It is a good idea to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, rich in iron and fibre.  This will help you recover after the birth.

Iron

Try to include the following foods which are rich in iron:

  • dark green leafy vegetables
  • pulses (beans, peas, lentils)
  • meat
  • cereals
  • iron-enriched bread.

Fibre

Increasing the amount of fibre in your diet will reduce the chance of constipation.

Try to include the following foods which are rich in fibre:

  • high-fibre breakfast cereals, for example Weetabix or Shredded Wheat
  • wholemeal or granary breads
  • wholewheat pasta
  • brown rice
  • potatoes with skins on
  • vegetables
  • fresh or dried fruit.
