Controlling your anticoagulation risk
After assessing you, we have found that you have a higher-than-normal chance of developing a blood clot in the veins (thromboembolism) after giving birth.
To reduce this risk, we have prescribed blood thinning (anticoagulation) medicines for you.
Your anticoagulation medicines
A blood clot in the vein can be serious.
It is important that you finish your recommended course of medicines.
The duration of your medicine depends directly on the level of your risk. A longer course, such as 6 weeks, means there is a higher risk of blood clots.
When to seek immediate help
Your prescribed medicine significantly reduces the risk, but it does not remove the risk completely.
Go to your nearest Emergency Department (A&E) if you experience any of the following:
- sudden unexplained shortness of breath
- chest pain or tightness
- coughing up blood
- collapse
- painful swelling of the legs.
