Why we test your balance
We are testing your balance because your GP or ENT consultant has referred you to us so we can try and find the reasons for your dizziness.
There are a range of tests available. We can find out more about your balance problem when we speak to you at your appointment. This will help us decide which tests we need to give you.
The tests we do will not necessarily give us a diagnosis, but they will help your consultant choose the best treatment for you.
Your appointment
Allow up to 2 hours for your appointment.
Preparing for your appointment
Follow this guidance to prepare for your appointment.
- If you take any medication for your balance, stop taking this medication 48 hours before your testing. Your ENT consultant will already have discussed this with you.
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your appointment.
- Avoid caffeine for 4 hours before your appointment. These include tea, coffee and energy drinks.
- Do not wear eye makeup to your appointment because this can affect the test results.
During your appointment
Your appointment will take place in the Kingston Hospital Audiology Department. You will not see your consultant at your appointment. An audiologist will explain which tests you need, and carry out your tests. All of the tests are straightforward.
- The test room is often in dim light.
- We may ask you to wear some goggles.
- We may put some electrodes (small sensors) on your forehead.
- We may put a little water into your ears for a few seconds at a time.
- Some of the tests might make you feel a little dizzy, but any dizziness you feel is controlled and should only last a short time.
Let the audiologist know if you feel unwell at any point during the tests.
After your appointment
Important
We recommend you do not drive after your assessment because you may feel unsteady afterwards.
Bring someone with you who can travel home with you.
You may feel unsteady after your appointment. This is normal.
This unsteady feeling will not last long, but some people experience it for the rest of the day. Try to rest when you get home.
Your results
The audiologist will explain the results of your testing to you, on the day. Your GP will also be in contact with you, either by letter or by appointment.
