Your appointment
Allow up to 3 hours for your child's appointment.
What to bring with you
Bring the following with you to your child's appointment:
- Their appointment letter (if you have one).
- The glasses that your child uses to watch TV or read, if they have any.
- Their most up-to-date eye examination prescription (sight test), if you have one.
- A list of their current medications (including eye drops).
- Sunglasses or a sunhat, in case we dilate (temporarily widen) your child's pupils (the small, dark circle in the middle of the eye).
- If this is your child's first visit to the Royal Eye Unit, bring with you any documentation relating to their eye condition (for example a referral letter).
- We have an open play area, but we advise you to bring toys and games from home for your child to play with. (We no longer offer toys in our play area, due to infection control restrictions).
After the appointment
Your child may need a number of tests, including drops to dilate their pupils. If we use drops to dilate your child's pupils, they may have blurred vision for up to 24 hours after the appointment. They may also be more sensitive to light.
However, your child should still be able to go to nursery or school after their eye appointment.
