Day 1 after your operation

Toothache

We have taken out one or more of your teeth.

Do not rinse mouth or spit

Do not spit or rinse your mouth out for the rest of the day.

Do not brush your teeth tonight.

Day 2 after your operation

Salt in glass of water

Dissolve a level teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot water.

Wait until it has cooled down.

Rinse mouth with salt water

Very softly and gently, gargle the salt water around where the tooth used to be.

Do this several times.

Do not drink the salty water.

Repeat

Do this 4 times a day for a week.

Do it last thing before you go to bed.

Do not smoke

Do not smoke for 1 to 2 days.

No alcohol

Do not drink alcohol for 1 to 2 days.

OK to eat food

It is okay to eat and drink normally (apart from alcohol).

No spicy food

Do not eat spicy food.

Do not eat soup or liquid meals.

Take your pills

Remember to take any painkillers or antibiotics we have given you.

Tell the nurse if you take the contraceptive pill.

Mouth bleeding

If your mouth starts to bleed.

Sit upright

Sit quietly in an upright position.

Cloth

Roll up a clean handkerchief or cloth and place it over the bleeding gap in your mouth.

Bite down onto the handkerchief or cloth.

A&E

If the bleeding does not stop and it starts to hurt or swell up, go to your nearest A&E department.

Stitches

Your stitches will either dissolve in 2 weeks or we will remove them at your next appointment.

Your next appointment will be at the Princess Alexandra Dental Wing at Kingston Hospital.
