After the birth
After the birth, we may have stitched your perineum to repair a tear or cut. The perineum is the area between your vagina and anus (back passage).
We will prescribe medicines to help reduce the chance of complications after your tear.
We advise you to take these prescribed medicines regularly.
We will offer you a follow-up appointment to make sure your tear is healing properly.
Important information
Speak to your GP if you have trouble passing urine (weeing) or opening your bowels (poohing).
They can refer you for further support if needed.
Emotional support
Having a baby can affect your emotional wellbeing.
Talk to your health visitor or GP. They can refer you to a specialist if needed.
You can also refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies (see More information below).
Future pregnancy
If you experience a perineal wound breakdown once, it does not mean you will experience it again with a future birth.
The specialist team looking after you (midwife and obstetrician) will assess your current symptoms and offer advice on future pregnancies and birth. They may also refer you to the Perineal Health Clinic.
