Day Surgery Unit: after a general anaesthetic

Important information

You must have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours following your procedure. This includes staying with you overnight.

After a general anaesthetic, you may feel tired for a few days. This is normal, but will vary in each individual.

Stay at home and rest following the anaesthetic.

Everyday activities

Your judgement and co-ordination can be affected after a general anaesthetic. 

For 24 hours after your anaesthetic, do not:

  • drive
  • operate machinery (including kettles and cookers)
  • make important decisions
  • sign any important documents.

Food and drink

You can eat and drink (non-alcoholic drinks) as usual.

Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
