About us

The Jasmine Unit cares for patients experiencing early pregnancy complications (such as bleeding, abdominal pain and severe vomiting) at less than 18 weeks of pregnancy and those experiencing acute gynaecological symptoms.

We can only see people with an appointment.

If you are experiencing heavy bleeding (e.g. soaking a sanitary pad in 30 minutes), have severe pain or feel very unwell, go to your nearest emergency department (A&E).

The unit has a team of specialist nurses, doctors and sonographers who specialise in gynaecology.

Assessment in the unit may include an ultrasound scan, dependent on clinical need.

Most ultrasound scans performed within the unit are internal to provide a better assessment when a pregnancy may still be in its early stages or when gynaecological concerns are present.

An internal ultrasound scan can be uncomfortable, but it is very safe in early pregnancy.

To help with ultrasound views, you will be asked to empty your bladder before to the scan.

If you do not feel comfortable with an internal ultrasound scan, a standard ultrasound scan can be done instead. This is common practice after 10 weeks of pregnancy and is best performed with a full bladder.

Please discuss any concerns with the healthcare professional at your appointment.

How to refer

Your GP or midwife can refer you to the Jasmine Unit. Some patients may be referred to the unit after attending the emergency department (A&E).

Please allow 2 working days for our administrative team to contact you after your referral has been received.

GP referrals should be sent to krft.jasmineunitreferrals@nhs.net

We cannot respond to patient queries via this email address. Please contact the unit by telephone if you have a question or concern you wish to discuss further.

Self-referral

If you have had 3 or more miscarriages in a row, or you have had a previous ectopic pregnancy, and are now in the early stages of a new pregnancy, you can refer yourself for assessment by calling the unit on 020 8934 6224.

Please DO NOT contact the Jasmine unit for routine maternity booking.

Your appointment

If you are given an appointment, please plan for potential parking or public transport delays. Parking on the Kingston Hospital site may sometimes take longer than expected.

If you arrive late to your appointment, we may be unable to see you and we may need to reschedule your appointment.    You can bring one partner, family member or friend with you to your appointment.

Due to the sensitive nature of appointments, we do not recommend that you bring young children to your appointment. If you are unable to arrange childcare, we will provide the best care possible around these circumstances.

We aim to see patients on time, but delays can occur. Scan appointments usually last around 20 minutes.

Depending upon scan findings, you may be asked to wait for a review with a nurse or doctor in clinic. This may add a waiting time to your visit.

Patients referred to the unit via the Emergency Department (A&E) will be seen based upon clinical priority. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Test results

A number of tests may be performed in the Jasmine Unit, including urine cultures, swabs and blood tests.

Please call the unit to get the results of your urine / swab test after 1 week (unless specified to call earlier).

Telephone: 020 8934 6224

Reception staff cannot tell you test results over the phone. They will ask a nurse or doctor to call you back to explain your results.

Pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) tests

Blood tests related to pregnancy under the pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) pathway are usually communicated by the team directly to patients. If you have not received your results within 24 hours, please call the unit.

Recurrent miscarriage tests

Blood test results investigating recurrent miscarriage will not be communicated by the Jasmine unit team. These blood test results will be discussed with you at a new appointment arranged within the Gynaecology outpatient department.

This appointment should come via post or phone and is arranged through the main Gynaecology admin department.
