About the clinic

The one-stop breast clinic is designed to get you an appointment as quickly as possible and do as much as possible all in one visit.

At the clinic, we can do investigations so that a diagnosis of your breast problem can be made as soon as possible.

This can mean that the clinic is very busy and your visit may take a long time. If you have several investigations, you could be with us for most of the day.

Investigations

We can do a number of investigations at the clinic.

We will discuss the examinations and results with you on the same day.

If necessary, we will give you a follow-up appointment before you leave.

The doctor will examine you and decide if you need any of the tests listed below. A nurse will be present.

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breasts. It is done by a female radiographer.

At least two x-rays of each breast will be done. The results are then reviewed by the Consultant Radiologist. They may then ask for you to have further mammograms and/or do an ultrasound of your breasts.

An ultrasound is a painless procedure performed by a female Consultant Radiologist.

Some gel will be spread on your breast and a scanning probe will be moved around it on top of the skin.

A fine needle aspiration is when a fine needle and syringe is used to take cells from the breast where there may be a lump or abnormal area. The sample is then sent to be looked at under a microscope. The results will be available later in the day.

A core biopsy uses a larger needle to take a sample of tissue. A female Consultant Radiologist does this using an ultrasound scanner to guide her. This can be carried out on the same day or at a later stage.
